Fall Decorating Made Simple: Cozy Ideas to Welcome the Season

As soon as the mornings start feeling a little cooler, I get the urge to add touches of fall around the house. The best part? You don’t have to pack every surface with pumpkins or completely redecorate to make your home feel warm and inviting.

One thing I love about fall decorating is that it’s all about layering. A few thoughtfully chosen pieces can completely change the mood of a room, and many of them can stay out from late summer all the way through Thanksgiving.

Here are a few of my favorite ways to decorate for fall using some of the displays we’ve created here at Artisan Home.

Start with a Beautiful Centerpiece

Your dining table or kitchen island is one of the easiest places to make a statement.

A large wooden dough bowl filled with pumpkins instantly creates a gathered, cozy feeling. Instead of filling every inch with pumpkins, tuck in greenery with berries around them. It softens the arrangement, adds texture, and gives everything a collected look rather than feeling overly themed.

Tip: Use pumpkins in muted greens, creams, or soft oranges instead of bright traditional colors. They’ll blend beautifully with your everyday décor and transition effortlessly through the season.

Decorate in Odd Numbers

One decorating trick I use all the time is grouping items in odd numbers.

For example:

  • A pitcher

  • Greenery

  • Two small birds

Or:

  • Candle

  • Wooden squirrel

  • Pedestal bowl

Odd-numbered groupings naturally feel balanced and more interesting to the eye.

Bring Nature Indoors

One of the easiest ways to make your home feel like fall is by using natural textures.

Think:

  • Berry stems

  • Greenery

  • Wooden bowls

  • Carved wood animals

  • Rustic pottery

  • Moss

  • Pinecones

  • Natural beads

Mixing these organic elements creates warmth without relying on lots of orange decorations.

Add Height Throughout the Room

Every display looks better when your eye has somewhere to travel.

Use:

  • Pedestal bowls

  • Candle holders

  • Stacked books

  • Rustic pitchers

  • Wooden risers

Notice how even something as simple as a berry arrangement becomes a focal point when it’s elevated on a pedestal.

Stack Those Books

Books are one of my favorite decorating tools because they’re inexpensive and incredibly versatile.

Stack two or three together to:

  • Raise a candle

  • Showcase a figurine

  • Add height beneath a vase

  • Fill an empty shelf

Choose books with warm cream, tan, or golden pages for an extra cozy touch.

Don’t Forget Your Walls

Wall décor doesn’t have to be elaborate.

A simple berry wreath, vintage-inspired artwork, or rustic mirror can make your room feel finished without adding clutter.

Layering wall pieces at different heights keeps everything feeling collected instead of perfectly matched.

Woodland Creatures Add Personality

One of my favorite decorating trends this year is incorporating woodland animals throughout the home.

Squirrels, birds, rabbits, and carved dogs bring charm and whimsy without feeling overly seasonal.

Scatter them throughout bookshelves, mantels, entry tables, and kitchen counters for little surprises that make people smile.

Candles Make Everything Better

If I could only choose one decorating accessory for fall, it would be candles.

Whether they’re real or battery-operated, they instantly make a room feel warmer.

Place candles:

  • In the center of greenery

  • On stacked books

  • Beside pumpkins

  • On mantels

  • In lanterns

  • On kitchen counters

The soft glow creates that cozy feeling everyone loves this time of year.

The Goal Isn’t Perfection

My favorite homes always feel collected, comfortable, and welcoming—not perfect.

Mix old with new. Layer natural textures. Add pieces that make you smile. Most importantly, decorate in a way that makes you happy.

Fall decorating should feel cozy, relaxed, and lived in. Whether you’re adding a simple berry wreath, styling a dough bowl, or placing a favorite candle on the mantel, every little touch helps create a home that’s ready to welcome family and friends.

From all of us at Artisan Home, we hope this season brings warmth, comfort, and plenty of reasons to gather around the people you love. Happy decorating! 🍂🏡
